Ten

Rain lashed against Sarah’s face, stinging her eyes as she stirred back to life. Her whole head ached, pain stretching from the crown of her head around the back where her freezing skull was propped on something hard. She blinked under the deluge, her fingers threading through her hair, testing her scalp for the ruptures she was sure she would find there. She found no cuts but a huge and sensitive lump on the top of her head. Gradually, she realised the rest of the discomfort in her skull and neck came from the odd position of her head forced back against a rock. In her disorientation, Sarah noticed her other hand was moving, bound with the first, swung around like a puppet’s arm. Opening her eyes wider, she saw that her left hand was bound to her right, tied at the wrist. They had used a blue and white cord to bind her, looping the stuff around her wrists over and over again. Sarah grimaced as she realised what had happened. Alex had left her for Gwen. Sarah had almost got away, but after nights of little or no sleep, and days of cold endurance tests, her strength had finally failed. She almost despised herself for such weakness. How could she have been so frail?

She was trembling. The cold was seeping into her body, into her bones. Unless she did something soon, exposure to the cold would get her before anything else. The wild moors were a stark contrast to her cosy cottage back in Trebarron. But her old life with Alex seemed long gone. Her eyes blurred and Sarah lost focus on her immediate surroundings. A dull ache throbbed in her head, and she touched her scalp again. There it was. She’d found it. Blood was trickling down by her temple. When Sarah tried to sit up, her head swam, and her heart pounded when she realised her ankles had been chained to something. Sarah twisted her wrists, grinding her teeth as she tested the cords that bound them together. She was surprised to find that the ropes weren’t tied too tight. Redman’s men had been sloppy, just as they had been back at the other cottage. Sarah grunted and pulled one hand free, leaving it sore, numb, and pink. Once the feeling began to return she teased the rope around her other wrist. Soon, the blue and white cord was on the floor, but Sarah was still chained at the ankles, and her clothes were as wet as if she’d swum in them.

“Odd,” she muttered, rubbing life back into her sore wrists.

She looked at the back of the rain-soaked cottage and caught a glimpse of one of her attackers. There was no sign of the kidnap victim, Craddock. She frowned, waited, and kept looking into the dimly lit room. She still saw only one man—the smaller bastard, and he had his phone pressed to his ear. Her pulse quickened, her mind racing with suspicion. She needed to keep her wits about her.
